Facelift surgery is designed to correct the most visible signs of aging, which include excessive facial wrinkles, diminished skin elasticity, loss of muscle tone and displaced fat. During the cosmetic surgery procedure, Dr. Terranova makes modifications to the skin, tissues and musculature to produce an overall rejuvenated facial appearance. He will tailor his precise surgical techniques to your individual concerns. For example, if your primary concerns are jowls or flattened cheeks, Dr. Terranova will target these areas specifically during your surgery to restore prominent cheekbones and a firm, smooth quality to the jawline, while enhancing the rest of the facial appearance.
Only board-certified plastic surgeons such as Dr. Terranova can judge whether you are a suitable candidate for facelift surgery. However, appropriate facelift candidates usually include individuals who:
- Are in good physical and mental health
- Do not have any serious medical conditions which could complicate the recovery process
- Do not smoke, or plan to quit smoking at least four weeks prior to and after surgery
- Have reasonable expectations of surgery (i.e., desire cosmetic improvement but not perfection)
- Are aware of the potential surgical risks, which will be covered in greater detail during the consultation
Dr. Terranova will discuss your candidacy during a surgical consultation at his Charleston facelift practice. He will examine your facial features and skin, and ask you to identify what you don’t like about your facial appearance. You may point out concerns such as lines / wrinkles around the mouth, sagging along your jawline, loss of volume in your cheeks or fullness and loose skin in the neck.
Dr. Terranova will then ask you to describe your ideal cosmetic outcome. He will also review your medical history and inquire about any previous surgeries. Finally, he will recommend the facelift technique best suited for your needs and aesthetic goals.
Facelift surgery is performed using general anesthesia as well as local anesthesia in the treatment area, so you will not feel any pain during surgery.
Dr. Terranova begins by making small incisions in front of and behind the ear, extending along the hairline into the scalp. Through the incisions, he will tighten the facial muscles, remove excess fat deposits from the neck and jowls, remove excess skin and tighten the soft tissues of the face and neck, following the treatment plan he has developed to address your individual concerns.
When he has finished making the necessary modifications, he will close the incisions with sutures or stitches, and place surgical dressings over the treated area.
Swelling, bruising and tenderness are normal after surgery. You should plan to take about two weeks off from work or your normal routine in order to focus on your healing at home. If you have pain or discomfort, Dr. Terranova will prescribe oral pain medication.
After a week, your side effects should largely improve, and your stitches will be removed. If you continue to have discomfort, over-the-counter medications such as Motrin or Aleve should relieve your symptoms. Avoid any strenuous movements, including bending and lifting, during the early post-operative period, until Dr. Terranova advises it is safe to return to these activities.
Everyone recovers from surgery differently, so it is crucial to listen to your body and let it heal at its own pace. Do not set overly high expectations for yourself. Be patient with the recovery process — your results will be well worth the wait.
After recovering from facelift surgery, your outward appearance will match your youthful spirit. Dr. Terranova’s refined surgical skills and eye for artistry ensure that you will look like yourself, only younger and more rejuvenated. It is important to note that facelift surgery does not stop the aging process altogether, but it will produce noticeable results that you will love.
Dr. Terranova offers several other types of facial rejuvenation surgery, including eyelid lift and brow lift. The former procedure targets droopy eyelids, puffiness and/or bags underneath the eyes; the latter addresses a sagging brow line and/or deep creases along the forehead or across the bridge of the nose.
