Non-Surgical Procedures Charleston

Facial rejuvenation procedures are one of the fastest-growing segments of Charleston aesthetic surgery and medicine. Between the more a more competitive job market and our aging population, requests to look more rested and more youthful have increased.

There are both surgical and non-surgical options for facial rejuvenation. They are not mutually exclusive. In fact they are often complementary

Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation

The nonsurgical options include the use of BOTOX® Cosmetic and various injectable fillers. These can help to soften or eliminate facial wrinkling as well as provide volume in areas where volume has been lost due to the effects of gravity and age. Lasers and chemical peels can improve skin tone, eliminate fine wrinkling and provide for more even skin coloring.

Although these techniques are largely temporary, they have been proven safe and effective in the proper candidates. Plus they have the distinct advantage of minimal risk and minimal downtime.

Surgical Facial Rejuvenation

In patients with more significant wrinkling and skin laxity, particularly in the neck, jowls, forehead and eyelids, these non-surgical techniques will have limited effect. In these patients, actual surgical lifting and tightening of the affected tissues will need to be done. This is accomplished with procedures such as brow lift, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), face lift and neck lift. The disadvantages of these surgical corrections are the surgical risks and the postoperative downtime. Still, these surgeries can provide dramatic and more lasting results in properly selected patients. Scars are planned to be hidden and even when not totally hidden are quite acceptable.

However, there are some areas that surgical procedures do not address well. The wrinkles in the lips and the fine wrinkling of the lower eyelids are typical examples. Therefore we will often employee a combination of surgical and nonsurgical procedures to optimize overall results at our Charleston area practice.

One of our main goals during your consultation will be to determine whether surgical, non-surgical, or combined options will provide you with the best results.

For those who want to consider non-surgical procedures, we offer several options, from Botox® to medical tattooing. These are performed by our specialist – Susan Watson-Neimy, RN. She has years of extensive experience using injectable dermal fillers and Botox to improve facial wrinkles, sclerotherapy to treat spider veins, and medical tattooing for permanent makeup, scar camouflage and nipple/areola restoration.

Botox®

Injected into the facial muscles, Botox improves the look of frown lines within days. The procedure takes approximately 10 minutes, requiring only a cold pack or anesthetic cream before injection. Results can be seen within days and can last up to four to six months.

Sclerotherapy

In use since the 1930s, sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. A saline solution is injected directly into the vein causing it to gradually fade from view.

Injectable fillers

If you wish to restore fullness to your face, plumpness to your lips or want to soften creases and wrinkles, dermal fillers may be the answer. Sometimes referred to as “liquid facelifts,” injectable fillers can often replace surgical procedures, reducing both cost and downtime. However, the results of soft tissue fillers are not permanent and need to be repeated and maintained.

Medical Tattooing

There are a wide variety of uses for micro pigmentation, or medical tattooing, of the skin. Medical tattooing can be used for permanent makeup to hide birthmarks, mask skin conditions and camouflage post-trauma and post-surgery scarring. Reconstructive tattooing is also used to recreate a nipple and areola for post-mastectomy patients.
