Even a person with a pleasant personality can develop a “frowny face” over time. The deepening creases across the forehead or high on the bridge of the nose can add years to one’s appearance. A browlift, sometimes called a forehead lift, restores a more youthful, refreshed look. Dr. William Terranova accomplishes this by tightening the skin of the forehead, raising the eyebrows to a more attractive position, softening wrinkles along the forehead and tightening droopy skin around the eyes. He caters his approach to your specific concerns, which you will discuss with him during a pre-operative surgical consultation.
Dr. Terranova will evaluate your candidacy for browlift on an individual basis during your consultation. However, the most suitable candidates for browlift usually meet the following criteria:
- Are in good health (both physical and mental)
- Do not smoke, or plan to quit smoking at least two weeks prior to and after surgery
- Are free of any chronic medical condition which could affect the surgery or recovery
- Desire reasonable improvement of the facial features
- Do not expect perfect results
- Are informed and aware of potential surgical risks (to be discussed during the consultative stage)
In addition to discussing whether you are an appropriate candidate for browlift, Dr. Terranova will perform a history and physical examination, where he will look at your facial bone structure, the thickness and elasticity of your skin, your brow position and other factors. You will be asked to identify the areas of your face you’d like to correct, and describe what your ideal results look like. Dr. Terranova will then explain the techniques that he feels will work most effectively in your case.
Browlift is generally performed using IV sedation or twilight anesthesia. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.
Dr. Terranova begins surgery by making incisions either along or behind the hairline. Through the incisions, he will make modifications to the skin, tissue layers and muscles to elevate the brow line, smooth wrinkles and “lift” the forehead. His precise technique will be tailored to your individual needs and goals, but his goal is to reverse the effects of gravity and restore a more youthful contour to the upper portion of the face.
When Dr. Terranova is finished making the necessary modifications, he will close the incisions using sutures or stitches. Finally, he will place surgical dressings over the treated area.
It’s normal to have moderate swelling, bruising and tenderness after surgery. You will need to keep your head elevated to reduce post-operative swelling, and you may be advised to apply ice packs to the treated area as well. If you experience pain or discomfort, Dr. Terranova can prescribe oral pain medication to ease your symptoms.
Every patient recovers differently, but you should plan to take one to two weeks off work after browlift surgery. Avoid any bending, lifting, straining or other strenuous movements during the first portion of your recovery. The side effects should significantly improve within a week, at which point you can wear concealing makeup to cover bruising.
Allow your body to heal at its own pace. Do not try to rush back to work or your normal routine if you aren’t ready. Also, keep in mind that you may have residual swelling for several months. This will eventually subside and you will be able to enjoy your beautiful results!
Thanks to Dr. Terranova’s skill and the advanced techniques he uses, the vast majority of his patients enjoy beautiful and natural-looking results. Less experienced plastic surgeons may overcorrect the eye area and produce “frozen” or “surprised-looking” results but this is not a concern with Dr. Terranova. Your forehead will look smooth and wrinkle-free and your browline will be restored to a younger-looking position. You will look happier, more alert and well-rested after browlift surgery.
You may be interested in rejuvenating other areas of your face with another type of procedure. Dr. Terranova offers facelift to target signs of aging on the lower portion of the face. He also offers more specific correction of the eyelids through blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).
