Implant Replacement Charleston

There is much incorrect information on the Internet regarding the topic of replacing breast implants.

If you have saline implants they do not need to be replaced unless they deflate. The deflation rate for saline breast implants over the lifetime of the implant is 3-5%. Implant deflation is not either painful or dangerous and the procedure to replace a deflated implant is very much the same as replacing and intact implant. The risks of surgery and the cost of surgery far outweigh any advantage of proactively changing older saline implants.

If you have silicone implants the question of whether or not you should change them will depend on the age of the implant.

The new generation of silicone implants, approved by the FDA in 2006, do not need to be replaced unless there are problems with the implant. There are statements on many Internet sites that these implants need to be replaced every 10 years. This is not true. It is a misinterpretation of the data. The data show that individuals who do have their implants replaced, do so at an average of 10 years following initial implant placement. If you have no problem with the implants, and the odds are overwhelming that you will not, then they will be yours for a lifetime.

The issue of whether to replace the older silicone gel implants (implants placed prior to 1990) is controversial. The data show that these older implants commonly rupture. However there is no data that these silicone implants (ruptured or not) cause any medical problems or cancer. Therefore the general consensus is that these implants should not be removed unless they are known to be ruptured and are causing local symptoms (breast pain, swelling, or inflammation).
